He attended Georgia School of Technology in Atlanta. During World War II, he joined the Merchant Marine and sailed on steam Liberty ships. He worked in several capacities for the L&N Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad. He is now retired and lives in Omaha, Nebraska. Among his many books is Seaboard Air Line Railway (Indiana University Press).
